Sustainability
Our First Annual Green Week
Here at SXSW headquarters we just completed a last minute, first attempt, at an annual Green Week. I say "attempt" because well, this is not the time of year to start anything new and strange around here. This is the time of year everyone has their eye on the prize (April), and their nose to the grindstone (March).
Up-cycling is the new Re-cycling
It is always better to up-cycle than to recycle. Recycling is a beautiful thing, but it does require a great number of resources, not the least of which are money and time. Up-cycling, on the other hand, can be as simple as changing the context in which a product is used. SXSW up-cycles whenever possible, and every year we are finding new ways to re-use the byproducts of our conference.
September Sustainability Update: The Green Zone

One of the highlights of SXSW 2011, in terms of sustainability, was the Green Zone. Located at the corner of 7th and Red River Street, the Green Zone featured a water re-filling station, a solar charging area to keep mobile devices energized, a recycling transfer center servicing sections of the central downtown area via human-powered transport, and information about the eco-friendly initiatives of Nokia, SXSW, and the City of Austin.
