Going Dutch: The Lowlands Festival

Lowlands2.jpgSXSW Staffer Lizzy Newton recently returned from checking out all the action at the 11th annual Lowlands Festival in Biddinghuizen, Holland. Each year, the festival continues to sell out, this year doing so in only eight days and in advance of announcing the line-up. It's such a hit among many due to the diverse programming, 2010 including acts ranging from NOFX to Deadmau5 to Mumford & Sons to The Specials. DJ's also spin into the night past 4am. Stages are covered by circus tents and hard wood flooring is laid beneath. A movie theater is set up on site screening films like The White Stripe's "Under Great White Northern Lights" and Banksy's "Exit Through The Gift Shop". The whole spectacle is definitely something worth seeing for yourself.

Lowlands also represents its homeland well featuring numerous Dutch artists. Moss, an Excelsior Recordings act, was one of the highlights. Their sound is rhythmic indie pop with a bit of melancholy thrown in for good measure. Moss made their performance one to remember by incorporating eight additional percussionists into their set. The image and sound created were grand, at moments overwhelming the audience and band alike and in so, creating a truly meaningful experience for all. See footage of their set below.
